The 2016 Earth Science Week Photo Competition

ESW Badge Final 2016 180w transparent strokeWith Earth Science Week 2016 just three months away, we’re excited to bring you the Geological Society’s 2016 photography competition!

Last year, we were thrilled to receive hundreds of amazing entries based around our list of 100 Great Geosites. The winners were displayed at the Geological Society during Earth Science Week, were used to create our first ever calendar, and featured on the BBC website.

As well as a range of prizes, this year’s winners will also have their photographs displayed during Earth Science Week (8th-16th October), and will feature in the Geological Society’s 2017 calendar.

Earth Science in Action

This year’s competition shares its theme with Earth Science Week – ‘Earth Science in Action.’ Photographers can interpret the theme in any way they wish – from the dynamic processes that shape our Earth, to fieldwork or exploration. The only rule is, images must feature the geology of the UK & Ireland.

If you’re looking for inspiration, you can download the 100 Great Geosites mobile app, or view the interactive map – but remember you’re not restricted to the 100 Geosites list!

To enter, send your images as an attachment, or a file transfer, to sarah.day@geolsoc.org.uk, interpreting the theme in any way you wish. Please also include your name and postal address.

Prizes

Winning photographs will be featured in our 2017 calendar, with full credit. In addition, first, second and third prizes will be awarded:

1st prize: £100
2nd prize: £50
3rd prize: £25

All 12 winners will also receive a collection of geological goodies, including our much coveted rock hammer usb sticks, a copy of the calendar, and a year’s free subscription to Geoscientist magazine.
