From our gadgets to our buildings, geology is everywhere. We want you to put your creative writing skills to use to tell us how geology shapes your life.
For students between the ages of 11 and 13, please write no more than 500 words, using one or more of these images as inspiration. Please ask your parent or guardian to submit your story for you.
For students between 14 and 18, you can write up to 800 words, using these images for inspiration.
Two winners will be chosen for each age group. The winners will receive their very own GSL Rock Pet, and some additional geology and Geological Society swag for good measure. The winning stories will be published on our blog.
Get your pens and pencils at the ready, as stories need to be submitted to firstname.lastname@example.org by 8 November 2020.
**UPDATE: The deadline for stories has now been extended to 1 December
This competition is being run as part of the ENGIE project, and we particularly encourage girls and young women to apply.
Terms and conditions
1. Students must be based in the UK or ROI and have the permission of their parent or guardian to enter. Entries for those under the age of 14 should be submitted by the responsible adult.
2. Entrants grant GSL the right to publish their work on our blog if selected as a winner, but retain all copyright of their work.
3. To enter, stories should be submitted to email@example.com by 23:59 BST. Entries should include the student’s name and age, and name of the responsible adult for entrants under 14. We would also like to know the name of the school the student attends, and, for GSCE and A-level students, whether they are studying geology and/or geography, but this information isn’t mandatory.
4. Entries will be screened by Geological Society staff, and judged by members of our Council and committees.
