The build up to this year’s Earth Science Week has already begun – which can only mean one thing. The return of the Earth Science Week photography competition!
As ever, our twelve winners will be displayed at the Geological Society during Earth Science Week (7-15 October), and feature in our 2018 calendar. In previous years, entries have been featured widely in the media, appearing on the BBC website and the Daily Mail online, among others.
Our Restless Earth
Once again, the competition shares it theme with that of this year’s Earth Science Week. ‘Our Restless Earth’ celebrates the 50th anniversary of plate tectonics theory, an anniversary the Geological Society will be celebrating with a major conference in early October. Photo competition entrants are welcome, however, to interpret this theme as broadly as they wish – any and all entries celebrating the dynamic and ever-changing geology of the UK and Ireland will be considered.
Winning photographs will be featured in our 2018 calendar, with full credit. In addition, first, second and third prizes will be awarded:
1st prize: £100
2nd prize: £50
3rd prize: £25
All 12 winners will also receive a collection of geological goodies, including our much coveted rock hammer usb sticks, a copy of the calendar, and a year’s free subscription to Geoscientist magazine.
The competition is free to enter, and open to all. You may submit as many photographs as you like, and images must feature geology from the UK or Ireland.
Photographs must be submitted electronically, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi, ideally landscape format, and large enough to be featured in a print calendar (minimum dimensions: 216mm x 154 mm).
Entries must be emailed to email@example.com by midnight on the closing date, Tuesday 19th September.
